Cycling Facilities Master Plan set to advance cycling in Victoria
Kipp Kaufmann, Tuesday, 21 May 2013

Cycling Victoria is one of six state sport associations that will be focusing on planning better community facilities in coming months.
The Cycling Victoria project is focused on delivering a Cycling Facilities Master Plan which will assist Cycling Victoria, our clubs, and local government to improve the planning and maintenance of facilities, increase participation in cycling sports, improve relationships between stakeholders and provide larger more sustainable clubs. It will also aid local governments and decision making bodies when engaging with cycling for the planning and development of appropriate infrastructure.
The plan will provide a framework for cycling facilities that are needed to advance cycling in Victoria. The plan will give key consideration to what facilities currently exist, where they are located, where the growth areas for cycling as a sport are (both demographically and competitively), where facilities are redundant and recommend a hierarchy of future facility provision.
In making the announcement, Minister for Sport and Recreation Hugh Delahunty said the funding, through the Community Facility Funding Program, would help a number of State Sporting Associations undertake state-wide community sports facility planning.
“A key objective of the Coalition Government is to help increase participation in sport and recreation, and having quality community facilities in the right places is a key factor,” Mr Delahunty said. “SSAs are central to helping us achieve this goal through the development of strategic facility planning."
Cycling Victoria would like to thank Sport and Recreation Victoria and the Minister for their support of this important project, and look forward to working toward better facilities planning for cycling.

Harcourt turns on a great weekend of racing
Shirley Amy / CV, Monday, 20 May 2013

The cycling community were treated to another exciting weekend of racing around the challenging Harcourt Hills at the weekend. Castlemaine Cycling Club again hosted the Metro and Country Road Championships for all grades and was delighted with the support received from cyclists, demonstrated by the large entries for both Championship days. Cold dry and still conditions greeted the city travellers as they arrived for the 9.00am start on Saturday and the coffee stand and hot foods catered by the locals were very well supported, beginning early. For the Country riders on Sunday morning it was very cold and frosty in some areas of the courses. However when the frost and fog abated early in the day it left beautiful sunshine and excellent racing conditions for riders and spectators alike. Harcourt also added a Country market to the occassion which added to the atmosphere around the starting area.
Marie Manskie was first on site both days, and the riders showed their appreciation to Marie, for her tireless work, at the first medal ceremony (see photo above). She was assisted to the number 1 spot on the podium and surrounded by riders for a unique photo opportunity. Thanks Marie from the cycling community. Castlemaine Cycling Club also received excellent assistance and cooperation as usual, from the group of Officials for both events and also from members of the cycling fraternity who willingly stepped up to help out.
The programs were the same on both days with riders leaving the start point in 3 waves over the day, the first at 9.00am then at 10.15 and 1.00pm. The J11 riders tackled an out and back course which is uphill all the way to the “U” turn at the 4 km point. The J13, J15 and W17 all rode laps of the lumpy 12km course to complete their respective distances. This circuit has surprises for the unwary, with a false flat, then short sharp hills, and several long climbs in succession, finishing off with a 4km downhill slope to within 300m of the line, then a slight uphill just to sort them out.
The Elite Men covered 2 laps of the 56km long course ahead of them. These large fields of riders were first to tackle this course and the Harcourt North hilly section did not disappoint, making hard work for the sprinters to hold the bunch. The Elite Women, M19, MMas 1, 2 and 3 all did the 80km combination of 2 laps of the small and 1 lap of the long courses. This is another tough combination. In the final wave of riders to head out were the M17, W19 and the remaining Masters groupings. Racing and presentations were well over by 3.45pm and riders and families were able to start their journeys home. For some the country riders this was a 3 or 4 hour drive.
Castlemaine Cycling Club look forward to hosting riders again for the IRTT based in Harcourt, on 23rd June.
It was terrific to have Metarace on board providing live timing services for the weekend, and detailed results for all events are available via the links below -

Ride for a reason with Cancer Council Victoria at the Whittlesea Challenge
Thursday, 16 May 2013

Cancer Council Victoria, charity partner to the Cycling Victoria Netti Challenge Series, is aiming to break their record amount raised last year of $37,650. Todd Harper, CEO of Cancer Council Victoria and team captain of Yellow Edge, is eager to reach target once more. ‘It would be wonderful if we could exceed last year’s goal and I am confident it can be done.”
Cancer Council Victoria became the official charity partner of the Cycling Victoria Netti Challenge series at the start of 2012. Riders are given the opportunity at each event to make a donation or sign up with the Cancer Council and fundraise themselves. “Whilst the challenge rides can be tough” Todd acknowledged, “a cancer diagnosis is tougher for the individual and their family, so I can’t thank those helping to raise funds enough”.
A self-confessed cycling enthusiast Todd Harper is team captain of the official Cancer Council cycling team, Yellow Edge. The team is made up of staff, their friends and supporters of Cancer Council. Participating in every ride, the team raises funds and helps spread the message on the importance of the Cancer Council’s research, support and prevention programs.
Cancer Council Victoria provides services for the one in two who will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85. “The work that we do is vital and it is wonderful to see the positive results that the Cancer Council can make on someone’s life…no one should battle cancer alone and we [Cancer Council] strive to ensure no one has too” Mr Harper stated. Cancer Council Victoria welcomes any riders into their team and anyone who would like to fundraise themselves.

Sprinters turn on the power at the 2013 Phillip Island Grand Prix
Tuesday, 14 May 2013
Most people would associate a trip to the Phillip Island GP circuit with going to watch cars or motorbikes flying around at speeds up to 300km/hr. However on May 11 it was the time for pedal power to take precedence. 'The island' turned on a beautiful day, with strong northerly winds propelling riders up the main straight at speeds of up to 80km/hr. However, this was countered by strong head and cross winds across the rest of the circuit.
The windy conditions and large fields meant that racing was hotly contested across all five grades; Elite Men A & B, Elite Women A & B and Masters Men.
The Women's event, with 33 starters, stayed together for the majority of the 66km (15 lap) journey. There were a number of small breaks develop throughout the race, usually in line with the intermediate sprints, but these were short-lived, and the seemingly inevitable bunch sprint was taken out by Lauretta Hanson (Building Champions Squad) from Nicole Whitburn (Liv/Giant) and Lisa Hanley (CCCC Women). Lauretta (pictured winning below) has won a number of Victorian Open events over the past two years including the inaugural 2012 Tour of the South West and the 2012 Warburton Road Race. However, this was certainly her most outstanding success to date, and bodes well for more future success. Congratulations Lauretta!
Interestingly, this result meant that Lisa Hanley and Nicole Whitburn are now tied for the lead in the 2013 VRS standings on 64 points after four rounds.

The Men's field of around 150 riders spent the majority of their 110km (25 lap) journey attacking one another, thus providing a very exciting and high pace race, with an average speed of 43.4km/hr. A group of three riders (Tom Leaper, Dom Dudkiewicz & Jay Bourke - pictured below) established a break of up to 35 seconds in the second half of the event. However, they were reeled in with 2 laps remaining and the sprinters lined up for glory.

As pictured below pre-race favourite and sprint specialist Shannon Johnson (Charter Mason Drapac Development) turned on the power in the final 400m and won decisively from Liam White (Essendon Skoda) and Dom Dudkiewicz (Footscray CC). It was clear after the race that this was a special moment and place for Shannon - having previously won a number of SuperBike races at The Island. Well done Shannon!

The teams events were very close, with Liv/Giant taking out the Elite Women and Footscray CC picking up the win in Elite Mens.
Full results can be found on the following links:
Brian Mangano's photo gallery from the event can be found HERE.
Many thanks to the Carnegie Caulfield Cycling Club for hosting the 2013 Phillip Island GP, and all the volunteers and officials who made this year's race such a success.

Cross Crazy Mother's Day!
Monique Hanley, Monday, 13 May 2013
I am in a semi circle straddling my bike and surrounded by a bunch of smiley faces. The atmosphere is full of anticipation and nervous tension. For me it feels like I have been let loose for the day, and I am secretly a bit giddy with this opportunity to run amok on my bike. I look around and can judge by the faces that I am not alone, confirmed further by the rider next to me who confides, ‘this is the best way to spend Mother’s Day!’ She reveals that her two sons are spending the day with her in-laws.
Our leader is Kate, and she is wearing an all-black tightly fitted outfit complete with long socks. It is the uniform of her inner urban bikie gang, but this sort of gang is far from usual. Called the ‘Dirty Deeds’ crew, they are the heart and soul behind the burgeoning Cyclo-cross movement in Victoria. And today this über cool gang is teaching a Beginner’s class on ‘cross skills for women.
What is Cyclo-cross? Kate tells us that it is like an off-road bicycle racing circuit involving a bit of sand, a bit of grass, a lot of mud, and some small bits of paved surfaces. The course designers add in ‘obstacles’ such as steps, barriers or slippery muddy slopes which cannot be ridden on a bike. The participant needs to jump off, get over the obstacle, and then remount their steed. The atmosphere at the events is very supportive, and in the last few years have generated huge inner urban crowd followings despite the depths of winter in which the ‘cross season prevails. All participants are wildly supported no matter the level of ability. While the winners are clapped politely, the biggest cheers are reserved for the best crashes. For some strange reason I am comforted by this explanation.
We are told the number one ‘skill’ to master is the combined art of dismounting, getting over the obstacle, and remounting in an efficient manner as possible. Kate is gracious in her demonstrations and assures us all the grass is soft enough for all of us to try the new techniques without fear.
I noticed straight away the difference in backgrounds across the riders attending. I knew some of the faces in the group from their racing backgrounds – track and road, but there were also mountain bikers, commuters and tourers. Many of whom had never raced before.
As we began our first attempt at dismounting, I soon learnt that our cycling backgrounds were irrelevant. If you have a hint of bike skills, and most women do given that 90% of us rode as kids, it was relatively simple to pick up the skill of a Cyclo-cross race dismount. It was very liberating across the whole group to see everyone learning something completely new, and to pick it up so quickly.
The session continued and we tried to pull all the new skills together in an attempt to establish a flowing dismount, cart-bike-over-the-barrier, and remount in a fluid movement. Two women who had quickly picked up the dismount-jump-remount combination confessed they had backgrounds in horse riding. Those foolish ones on mountain bikes (me included) immediately noticed just how heavy a mountain bike is to pick up and cart over an barrier, but we comforted ourselves that the extra pre season weight training from hiking these beasts would pay off in the long term. Here’s hoping anyway.
We added some more skills including cornering on grass and race starts before participating in a mock race. This was definitely a highlight for me, trying to put all the newly acquired skills into a pressure and real-time format. It was crazy. I scared myself, rode hard, breathed harder, dropped concentration in parts and tried to recover in others. I finished the race with my head spinning but loving every second of it, alongside thirty other women feeling the same way. Awesome.

Saturday Night Track Racing a Big Hit!
Monday, 13 May 2013
On Saturday the first of 2013 Winter Track Series lit up the boards of DISC with 54 competitors, and almost as many spectators, enjoying track racing like it used to be. A to D-grade plus a women's grade meant there was a level of racing to suit everyone, and with Sprint Derbies on the program, it meant lots of racing with multiple heats and finals.
The series has been designed to give those hardcore and emerging A-grade 'trackies' regular winter racing as well as being a great bridge for those newer to the sport to get used to open-style track racing. With a junior world champion in attendance (Zac Shaw) as well a number of emerging talents (Ross, Castles) and top-teir under-17 riders (Koroknai, Ramshaw, Ellul) the racing was of a high calibre at the pointy-end and just as competitive down through the grades. The format meant the wins were shared around but Shaw showed the two-week training camp he'd just completed had done him no harm. The maximum gear restriction for the seniors of 92.6" added to the close racing that bought tactics far more into play - especially in the sprint derbies.
Special thanks to Sam McGregor, Adriana Abels, Tegan Wolfport, David Morgan, Brett Curran, Andrew Fitzgerald, Marie Manskie, Dale Fitzgerald and all other volunteers who helped make the night such a success.
The next round of the Winter Track Series is schedule for 15th June and will feature a round-robin keirin series as well as racing for track enduros as well. Be sure to get your entry in prior to the event using the Cycling Victoria online entry system.

Entries Open for the 2013 VSCC
Tom Dixon, Friday, 10 May 2013
Cycling Victoria is pleased to announce that entries are now open for the 2013 Victorian Schools Cycling Championships (VSCC). For over 50 years the VSCC has been the breeding ground for star Australian cyclists and provided a platform for students to be introduced bike racing.
The 2013 VSCC includes eight Road events, five BMX, four MTB and a one-off Cyclocross state final. By working closely with cycling, MTB and BMX clubs, CV will deliver a series of quality events that will provide for safe and exciting racing, as well as the strong community feel that has been such a crucial part of the VSCC since its early days.
The premier VSCC event, the Road Series State Final, will be held in conjunction with the Tour of Gippsland in Ballarat. Through the partnership, this event will include a great atmosphere, a fantastic course and will give students the opportunity to see the nation’s best female cyclists racing one of the major events on the Women’s National Road Series Calendar. In order to get to the state final, students will race in any of the seven zone finals located in Albury, Ballarat, Bayswater, Bendigo, Cranbourne, Fairfield, and Geelong. Click here to see the events and learn more about the 2013 VSCC Road Series.
Students keen on MTB can now race to their heart’s content in the 2013 VSCC MTB Series. The series returns with one major change – the chance to race all four events, and to enter the state final regardless of finishing position at the zones. The three zone events all return to the 2012 venues: You Yangs Regional Park near Geelong, Nail Can Hill in Albury, and Dromana Secondary College. The state final will be held at the former Commonwealth Games course at Lysterfield Park. Click here to see the events and learn more about the 2013 VSCC MTB Series.
The BMX series heads to some new clubs for the first time ever, including Warrnambool BMX Club, Wyndham BMX Club, and Eastfield who will host the state final. The northern zone final returns to Shepparton, while South Eastern BMX will once again host the East & Metro zone event. All up there will be five events including the state final, and as per the MTB competition students will be allowed to enter the state final providing they have raced a zone event. Click here to see the events and learn more about the 2013 VSCC BMX Series.
In an Australian first, CV presents the inaugural VSCC Cyclocross (CX) State Final! For those who don’t know, CX is a specific cycling discipline that has been popular in Europe for over a century. It can be described as a cross between road and MTB, yet there is much more to it. The VSCC CX State Final will be run at the Victorian State CX Championships this September. Don’t miss out on the chance to be part of this unique and exciting event. Tell me more!
CV would like to acknowledge the ongoing support from out event partners Netti, Goldcross Cycles, Winning Edge Presentations and Parks Victoria.

Saturday Night Winter Track is back in 2013
Wednesday, 17 April 2013

In years past, Saturday night meant track racing; full-house signs went up at the Essendon board track or Olympic Park. While things have changed since those halcyon days, 2013 marks the return of regular Saturday night track racing. Following the success of last year’s DISC-O Track series comes five Saturday Nights – one per month – from May to September offering racing perfect for those developing in the sport, those wanting to keep their track legs ticking over in winter and those that want to race out of the wind and rain at least once a month.
The first event is on Saturday, 11th May 2013. Racing starts 4:30pm / Rego from 3.30pm with track open for warm-up from 4pm. Online entries here plus entries on the day accepted for a $5 premium.
The Saturday night Winter Track Series will include a mix of sprint and endurance racing in a graded format for under-17 riders and above (elite, masters, U19 – men and women). The lower grades will be well suited to those looking to develop their track experience, while A & B grade will offer fast racing for the more experienced riders.
All riders to get a minimum of four races per event. There will be nightly aggregate prize money for each grade, plus a season long aggregate with generous prize money on offer.
More information can be found here or call or email Event Director Daryl Perkins, Email: dpframes@yahoo.com / 0418 531 218.
